First came the double murder of a journalist and his fiancee, shot dead at their home in a crime that shocked Slovakia. Then came something equally surprising: a movement triggered by the murder brought tens of thousands on to the streets for the biggest protests seen in the country since the Velvet Revolution. This led to the resignation of the prime minister, Robert Fico, who had dominated Slovakia’s political scene for over a decade, as well as the country’s interior minister.
